23% cheaper than Sydney and Melbourne

In the Economist Intelligence Unit’s annual World Wide Cost of Living Survey, Adelaide regularly achieves an excellent ranking as one of the most affordable cities in Australia. Adelaide offers the same quality lifestyle and education opportunities as other Australian cities, but at significantly less cost. Statistics show that Adelaide is 23% cheaper to live in than Sydney and Melbourne, 12% cheaper than Perth and 11% cheaper than Brisbane. Mei Cheong, who studied at the University of Adelaide tells us 'The lifestyle and quality of education were two reasons why I chose to study in Adelaide. But another attraction was the affordability. My family saved $35,000 just in living expenses over the four years I was there than when compared to Melbourne and Sydney.'

Nobel prize capital of Australia

The University of Adelaide

Adelaide's list of graduates reads like a roll call of excellence, and it's been that way for 140 years. Three Nobel Laureates have studied here (more than any other city in Australia) and more than 100 graduates have gone on to become Rhodes Scholars. And the tradition continues, with world-renowned institutions choosing Adelaide to set up their first international campuses; in 2006 it was the prestigious U.S. University, Carnegie Mellon; and in 2009, University College London opened its doors in the heart of Adelaide.

Voted the safest Australian city by international students

A recent survey by IDP of 6,000 current international students in Australia voted Adelaide as the safest, friendliest and cleanest Australian city.  Read more about it here...

Learn English faster

Adelaide hosts only 30,000 international students each year, significantly less than Melbourne (183,000+) and Sydney (230,000+), which means you can really immerse yourself in the local culture and language.  Living in an English-speaking environment makes the job of learning so much easier, because you have to speak English! And because Adelaide is one of Australia’s most welcoming cities, you’ll find it really easy to interact with the locals – whether you’re in the shops, at a café or at the beach.

Multicultural

One in five South Australians (or 300,000 people) were born overseas - half in countries where English is not the dominant language - so we're well practised at welcoming newcomers to our city. And because South Australians come from more than 120 countries, the state has a wonderful mix of cultures and influences. There are many cultural and religious associations in Adelaide, so home is never far away. Click here to find out about associations in Adelaide.
