Dr Warren, along with Dr Barry Marshall, was awarded the Nobel Prize for the discovery of the bacterium Helicobacter and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. Dr Warren is a graduate of the University of Adelaide.

During the past century, tens and possibly hundreds of millions of lives have been saved thanks to Sir Howard Florey’s development of penicillin. The ramifications of Florey's work have been greater than just penicillin and saving lives - the discovery of penicillin's astonishing properties opened the door to the development of many other antibiotics. Sir Howard was educated in Adelaide.

The youngest recipient of the Nobel Prize, Sir (William) Lawrence Bragg was jointly recognised with his father, Sir William Henry Bragg, for the discovery of the x-ray technique for investigating the structure of crystals. Sir William was educated at the University of Adelaide.
