When was the last time you did something for the first time?

I woke up at 5 am, even before my alarm went off (very unusual once you get to know me). But then, today was different. I was in for the ride of my life. Literally!

                                    sunrise

Mr. Chapman (76), a friend’s grandfather had invited me to go flying! A modest, two-seater aircraft awaited us in an aerodrome just one hour from the city. I soaked in the sunrise on this crisp morning, and looked out optimistically at the kangaroo and koala road-signs.

                                      gearing up to fly

Once there, I was given my apprentice cap and duties were assigned. I opened the doors, helped in moving the aircrafts (woahhhh!!) and observed diligently as he fuelled up the tank and made entries in his journal. I learnt that you need to work hard on the ground to earn your right to soar the skies.

And then it finally happened. I found myself fastening my seat-belt, putting on the headphones and introducing myself on the radio! Captain Chapman let the world know that we were ready to take off! I felt goose bumps all over, the wheels were off the ground and soon we were looking down at the hills, people seemed like ants, the houses as if from a game of Lego and the landscape -absolutely breathtaking.

                 murray river mouth

I was introduced to the controls and the region – Victor Harbor, the Murray River, Strathalbyn and even his daughter’s house. He was focused and in control, but made it seem effortless. I was simply clicking away and capturing all these stunning views for myself and understanding what actually happens in a cockpit. Just to experience South Australia this way and getting an insight into flying has been such a adventure. I can’t put into the words the rush of feelings I experienced in that very moment.  Unbelievable!

He patiently answered all my questions about the aircraft and the region. And then he declared it was time to land. I looked around one last time and pinched myself to believe this was true. The smooth landing marked the end of the adventure, and at the same time made me realize that in many ways, that the journey had only just begun.

Thank you Captain Chapman. This is co-captain Vishal signing off ;-)

I always think about travelling and adventure, like you, and i am interested in writing what i experienced of my day. But i am little worried because you write it so good, while i can not express myself so well. You are my idol. Yours, Dayan
