Adelaides secret

Topic - Finding part-time work

When you are looking for part-time work in Adelaide it can either be a very simple process or a long hard and just plain annoying one!

Many students in Adelaide (including myself) get jobs in hospitality- working in cafes, bars, restaurants, pubs and clubs, in order to make a little money to help live! It’s really convenient to get into this industry because most of the work is outside of uni hours and on weekends etc plus it usually pays a lot better than other jobs such as retail and fast food.

I know many people who arrive in Adelaide and start trying to find a job without any experience and find it very hard. As an Adelaidean I can see why this is. Here, just between you and I, I will let you in on Adelaide’s secret. - Because Adelaide is such a small place (compared to other major cities anyway) the saying goes that 'in Adelaide everyone knows everyone.' Because of this many managers and owners only employ people who they know and people who friends know.

SO- the tip to finding a part-time work in Adelaide is to make your self known as soon as you land! Meet as many people as you can and maybe even drop into conversation that you’re keen for some work and ask if they know anyone who is hiring.
It certainly won’t hurt! Good luck!

Another great idea to help get part time or full time work is to offer to work for free for a little while. I have a friend from Malaysia who went for a job with a government marketing agency here in Adelaide and although she did not get it she didn't let that stop her. She called the agency boss and asked for some feedback about why she didn't get the job and then offered to do work experience on a voluntary basis. The agency boss was so impressed that my friend was given a project to work on and then once that had finished she was offered some part time, paid, work. The paid work lasted for at least six months. But the great thing about all of this was my friend gained invaluable work experience and just recently she got a full time job in marketing at one of the universities here in Adelaide. So my message is, if you can't find work, offer to do some for free. You never know where it will take you.

Hi ppl! I'm new to Adelaide and I can't understand the accent of the ppl and moreover I find difficult to travel . I need exposure to all such things. Please could anyone help me get over this situation? I don't have any friends over here. Really hard time for me. I'm an Indian and totally unaware about the culture. I booked an orientation in my university for international student. Let see what I get out of it. I need help. Please guide. And really need a new job to survive or I will have to quit. Thanks.

When working for free or doing work experience, be really careful because you aren't covered by insurance. Also, please please please don't work for cash in hand, especially for a small wage. Stand up for your rights and don't let employers get away with it!
