Julim Kwak
Julim Kwak was teaching mathematics in a private school in Seoul when she decided on a career change. Health care was her preferred option and studying overseas was a must, because changing careers in later years is almost impossible in Korea.
Julim had never heard of Adelaide – so it was a lucky day when she met with IDP Education Australia in Seoul. It was there that a study adviser told her about the two-year graduate entry course in nursing, offered by Flinders University.
“The graduate entry course is a benefit to anyone who already has a bachelor degree,” she says. “As far as I remember, only Flinders and one other university in another state offered the graduate entry program at that time, 2005, when I was applying.”
After completing her Bachelor of Nursing (graduate entry) and working part-time for a year in a nursing home, Julim now has not one, but two nursing jobs in Adelaide.
She’s employed in the registered nurse casual pool at Flinders Medical Centre – working everywhere from intensive care and the coronary/cardiac unit to the general medical and surgical wards – and is also a renal nurse at the Hartley Dialysis Centre in Brighton.
In the future she’s considering studying for a renal graduate certificate, and if she gets a permanent position in the intensive care unit at Flinders Medical Centre, she’ll study for her ICCU certificate too. And for now, she’s continuing to call Adelaide home.
“Adelaide is a very quiet, safe, cost-effective and friendly city,” she says.
“I love to walk on the beach whenever I have time. Glenelg, Brighton and Christies Beach are my favorite places to relax, and also there are nice places around Adelaide like the Barossa Valley, Cleland, Hahndorf, Mt Lofty, Victor Harbor and Murray Bridge.
“Moreover, I don’t usually drink, but here wine is so famous for its quality and lovely taste, I like it.”
