Elijah Liech was flicking through the newspaper at home in Nairobi one day, when he spotted an advertisement that sent him half way around the world.

The ad was promoting Carnegie Mellon University, a prestigious Unites States institution that opened its doors in Adelaide back in May 2006.

Less than a year later, Elijah was in Adelaide, studying a Masters in Information Technology at CMU and radically improving his professional prospects.

“Here in Kenya I head the ICT (Information & Communication Technology) Unit at the Ministry of Public Service, and I am also a Project Manager for the Directorate of e-Government in Kenya,” Elijah said.

“Since returning home, I have taken responsibility for more IT projects due to my study and achievements at CMU, and this greatly boosts my career development.

“I am definitely more valuable as a human resource now, and I hope this will help me to reach my career goal of working in project management at consultancy level.”

While in Adelaide, Elijah worked part-time at the CMU campus and lived at the Elm Tree student’s lodge, just a few minutes south of the city centre.

“It was very nice and quiet, with all basics in the near vicinity. Adelaide has a beautiful environment, and the people are very homely – I would recommend it very much as a study destination.”

Not only that – Elijah has now joined the ranks of more than 72,000 CMU alumni worldwide, and is armed with a dual US and Australian degree from an institution that was ranked 20th in the world in 2007 by London’s Times Higher Education Supplement.
