Master chefs making friends in the kitchen
18 Aug 2010
Education Adelaide in conjunction with the Salvation Army is giving international students the opportunity to try out their skills in the kitchen.
Over the Winter months, students will learn to cook under the watchful eye of cooking editor and former restaurateur Promila Gupta.
The food prepared will then be used to feed some of Adelaide’s homeless.
The Salvation Army will invite some members of the homeless community to its premises on Pirie Street and Ms Gupta says the students will get not only a valuable lesson in cooking but also in community awareness.
“We want to assure students’ parents that their sons and daughters are eating well and as a result are happy here in Adelaide.
“Also the students have a great opportunity to help other people and work with the local community here in Adelaide.”
Ms Gupta will be explaining how to cook simple Indian food to help save money and to stay healthy. Students will learn how to cook mixed vegetables, lentil curry and rice and the recipes will be provided at the end of the class.
The opportunity for students from all over the world to explore different food cultures – in this case Indian – is also a great way to make friends.
Ms Gupta says experiences like this will stay with international students for a long time after they’ve returned home, and will encourage them to recommend Adelaide and South Australia to their friends and family as a great place to live and learn.
