Pandas’ new friends offer timely advice

The Adelaide Zoo has enlisted the help of some of South Australia’s best and brightest Chinese students to help Wang Wang and Funi settle in to their new home.
Two students have compiled their top-ten-tips on how to successfully get along in Adelaide.
University of Adelaide student Xiaoli Hu highlights her experience of moving to Adelaide to try and help.
“When I first got here I didn’t know anyone and everything was very strange, especially the way Australians talk,” she said.
“My advice to Wang Wang and Funi is to just relax, McDonalds doesn’t serve quarter pandas – it’s the Australian accent!”
TAFE student Sunny Huang’s advice is with summer here try and stay as cool as possible.
“Wang Wang and Funi should look for the air-conditioned enclosure because the weather here can be hotter than Szechuan food,” she said.
So, the top-ten-tips for successful living in Adelaide are:
- Choose your football team wisely, although wearing those colours there’s probably only one footy team you can support
- Wear a hat, sunscreen and cover up (or as Sunny says find the air-conditioning) because the weather here can be hotter than Szechuan food.
- Don’t be fooled by the koalas – they’re not bears and they’re not cuddly
- Cricket isn’t an annoying insect which keeps you awake at night – it’s a national obsession
- Don’t pat the crocodiles
- The green bits on top of a pie floater ain’t bamboo
- Make sure you wear white zinc cream – with your colour scheme you’d look silly in pink or green
- The best place to meet friends is in the Mall near the balls
- Always swim between the flags
- Relax, McDonalds doesn’t serve quarter pandas – it’s the Australian accent!
