Education Adelaide statement on student safety

16 Jun 2009

Statement by Education Adelaide’s Chair, Mr Bill Spur and Chief Executive, Ms Denise von Wald

We condemn the recent attack of an Indian student in Adelaide and all violence against international students in Australia.

As South Australia’s peak body for international education, we are deeply committed to ensuring all international students feel welcome and safe in our community and return home enriched by their experience.

For several years, the number of international students in South Australia has grown faster than the national average. The growth can be attributed to the outstanding experience students have in Adelaide and the positive messages they send home to friends and family.

The Premier of South Australia condemned the recent attack as a “disgrace” and is committed to supporting international students in the State. "We will not tolerate any form of racism" he says. "We are seen internationally as one of the safest and most supportive multicultural communities.”

The victim of the recent attack contacted our office to say he has been heartened by the overwhelming support given by management and friends at his place of part-time employment. “Management sent a hamper and card signed by all staff and allowed me to take sick leave” he says.

Education Adelaide remains committed to working with the State Government, education institutions and the wider community to enhance Adelaide’s reputation as a dynamic, diverse and welcoming place to live and study.
